Yoel Romero KOs Lyoto Machida at UFC Fight Night 70.

Lyoto Machida’s time as an elite UFC middleweight may be up, following a devastating loss to the powerful Yoel Romero.

The problem for Machida, but also the reason we keep tuning into his fights, is that he keeps fighting absolute killers. In the past 12 months he’s fought Chris Weidman for the middleweight title (hardly an embarrassing performance), been submitted by Luke Rockhold and now a KO to Romero.

He did get a ‘Performance of the Night’ bonus for his first round stoppage of C.B. Dollaway, but aside from that win the former light heavyweight champion seems to be lacking that zip that has made him so dangerous in the past.

Compare him to Romero, who is actually one year older at 38 but has explosive speed that can instantly unsettle his opponent.

The former Olympic wrestler exploded for a quick takedown and then landed five brutal elbows that put Machida out cold midway through the third round, instantly confirming him as one of the next big contenders for the title alongside Ronaldo ‘Jacare’ Souza.

This loss is hardly a reason to run Machida out of the UFC, he will no doubt be given another fight and he definitely deserves one, but his days contending for UFC titles may have come to an end.
